Admission process for IITs and NITs

The admission process for Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) is a two-step process:

National Testing Agency Releases Examination Calendar for Academic Year 2024-25
NTA Exam Calendar for Academic Year 2024-25

1. Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). There are two JEE exams: JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

JEE Main

It is open to all students who have passed Class 12 with a minimum of 75% ( Gen.) or 65% ( SC/ST) aggregate marks.

.

JEE Main is a national level engineering entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

.

The exam is held twice a year, in January and April. JEE Main is a computer-based test.

.

It consists of three sections: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Each section is of 100 marks, for a total of 300 marks.

.

To qualify JEE Main, students must score at least 40% marks in each section and 45% aggregate marks.

.

The top 2.5 lakh rank holders in JEE Main are eligible to participate in JEE Advanced counselling.

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The exam is held once a year, in May.

.

JEE Advanced is a computer-based test and consists of two papers: Paper I and Paper II.

.

To qualify JEE Advanced, students must score at least 35% marks in each paper and 35% aggregate marks.

.

The top 2.5 lakh rank holders in JEE Advanced are eligible to participate in JoSAA counselling.

.

2. Joint Seat Allocation Authority counselling  (JoSAA). It is a centralized counselling process for admission to IITs, NITs, and other government-funded technical institutes.

.

Students who have qualified JEE Main and JEE Advanced can register for JoSAA counselling and fill in their choices of colleges and courses.

.

JoSAA will then allot seats to students based on their JEE ranks and choices.

1. JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY

The B.Tech admission process in Jadavpur University is based on the performance of candidates in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE).

Eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates must have passed the ’10+2′ examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

  • Candidates must have secured a minimum of 45 % aggregate marks in the 12th class examination (40% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates).

There are 11 University/University Department, 9 State Government Engineering College, 1 State Government Pharmacy College , 1central Government Engineering College (1),  8- Private University , 63 – Private Engineering College , 26- Stand Alone Private Pharmacy College.

 

2. ANNA UNIVERSITY

The B.Tech admission process in Anna University is based on the performance of candidates in the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) counseling process.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates must have passed the ’10+2′ examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • Candidates must have secured a minimum of 45 % aggregate marks in the 12th class examination (40% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates).

3. Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai

The B.Tech admission process  is based on the rank either the JEE Main or the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT CET).

Eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates must have passed the ’10+2′ examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

  • Candidates must have secured a minimum of 45 % aggregate marks in the 12th class examination (40% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates).

4. Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi does not conduct a separate entrance exam for B.Tech admission. Instead, admissions are offered based on the candidates’ performance in the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE Main).

5. Delhi Technological University (DTU)

B.Tech admission for it  is done through the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE Main) score. But,the admission process is conducted by the Joint Admission Committee (JAC) Delhi.

6. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)

Its B.Tech admission process  is based on the performance of candidates in the AMUEEE (Aligarh Muslim University Engineering Entrance Examination).

The B.Tech admission process in Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur is based on the performance of candidates in the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE Main) examination.

8. Chandigarh University (CU)

Chandigarh University (CU) offers admission to its B.Tech programs through the Common University Entrance Test. CUCET is a national-level entrance exam conducted by CU for admission to its various undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The B.Tech admission process in VIT, Vellore is based on the performance of candidates in the VITEEE (VIT Engineering Entrance Examination).

Eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates must have passed the ’10+2′ examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

  • Candidates must have secured a minimum of 60 % aggregate marks in the 12th class examination (50% for SC/ST/Hails from Jammu and Kashmir/ Ladakh and the North Eastern states).

The B.Tech admission process in Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is based on the performance of candidates in the AEEE (Amrita Entrance Examination – Engineering) or the JEE Main examination.

A pass in 10 + 2 (Class XII) or its equivalent examination from a recognized board with minimum 60% aggregate of marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry

and with not less than 55% in each of these three subjects, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

The B.Tech admission process in Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) is based on the performance of candidates in the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE Main) examination.

4. Birla Institute of Technology & Science -Pilani.

The Birla Institute of Technology & Science – Pilani (BITS Pilani) offers B.Tech admission through two processes:

  • Birla Institute of Technology & Science Aptitude Test: BITSAT is a computer-based aptitude test conducted by BITS Pilani for admission to its various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The exam is usually held in May-June.

 

  • Direct Admission to Board Toppers: First rank students of State and Central boards in India for the year 2023 will be given direct admission to the programme of their choice, irrespective of their BITSAT-2023 score as per the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility criteria:

The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics subjects, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/ Biology subjects.

5. Siksha `O` Anusandhan, Bhubaneshwar

It offers B.Tech admission through the SOA Test (SAAT). SAAT is a computer-based aptitude test conducted by SOA for admission to its various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The exam is usually held in April-May.

Eligibility criteria:

Candidate shall have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with at least 60% marks (50% in case of SC / ST / OBC category).

6. S.R.M. Institute of Science and Technology

The B.Tech admission process in S.R.M. Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) is based on the performance of candidates in the SRMJEEE (SRM Joint Entrance Examination-Engineering).

Eligibility criteria:

Minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry /Biotechnology/ Biology/ Computer Science/ Information Technology/ Informatics Practices/ Engineering Graphics.

Stream 1 (based on JEE(Mains) score and +2 Marks) for 70% of seats
